Catalogue Description

Structural design and construction of foundation systems. Topics will include: structural design of shallow foundations (such as single footings, strip footings, and mat foundations), deep foundations (such as piles and caissons), retaining walls, sheet piles, excavation bracings, tie backs, and anchors. This is an application-oriented design course in which students are required to do a real-life project in groups of three from preliminary design stage to final construction phase.

Course Objectives/Outcomes

The objective of this course is to use students accumulated knowledge obtained in previously taken theoretical and conceptual classes to design a real-life structure from A to Z. In order to simulate an actual engineering design office students will work in groups and will report to a project manager who represents the client and its interests. There is no spoon-feeding in this class. Students are expected to be able to solve major design problems on their own without much help. Yet methods of problem solving will be taught. Structural design and construction of foundations is one of the most important steps in the construction of any type of structure. This is course covers essential design know-how for students who are interested in pursuing a career as a geo-technical engineer, structural engineer or construction manager. It is not intended for students who are interested in theory. The objective of the course is to teach students how to decide on the type of foundation and also to design the foundation according to the code applicable to that structure. This is an application oriented design course for students who are knowledgeable about soil mechanics, foundation engineering, structural analysis and reinforced concrete and steel design. This is NOT a theoretical course. The course is arranged around a semester long real life design project. The main objective of the course can be summarized as to teach students how to design the foundation of a real structure using procedures used in engineering practice. Every week there will be video presentations of real life major civil engineering projects.
