Catalogue Description |
Mechanical properties of materials. Crystal structure, phase equilibrium, deformation behavior under various states of stress. Failure theories, metals, composite materials, prediction of composite material properties based on properties of constituent materials, and concrete mix design. Applications of materials science to design of structural components. |
Course Objectives/Outcomes |
The objectives of the course are as follows: to develop an understanding of concrete behavior by studying the impact of chemical and mechanical behavior of constituent materials on the over all behavior of the material to address the crystal structure of metallic materials and draw the relationship between mechanical behavior and several aspects of material science such as dislocations, impurities, grain size, and processing effects to discuss the mechanical behavior and failure mechanism of metals to introduce polymeric materials processing behavior to emphasize the methods of predicting the mechanical properties of polymer composites and give students the tools needed to select the best material for specific applications. |
