Catalogue Description

Seeks to develop a basic understanding of the scientific rationale behind the design for large-scale public works, of the urban social context within which such works are funded and built, and of the symbolic meaning of these structures seen as cultural moments and works of art. One lecture per week.

Course Objectives/Outcomes

  1. Develop understanding of what Civil Engineers do.

  2. Develop elementary understanding of what is involved in the basic areas of concentration in Civil Engineering at the University at Buffalo: Structural and Earthquake Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering, and Computational Mechanics.

  3. Serve as a beginning point of contact between freshmen in Civil Engineering and faculty in Civil Engineering and alumni professional engineers.
