Undergraduate Student Awards

National/Regional Awards

NSF Graduate Fellowships: These prestigous fellowships support highly qualified students pursuing graduate study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

2008: Kelly Miller was awarded a 2008 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. Miller, a senior environmental engineering student, has been engaged since her freshman year in research and activism regarding world-wide water quality issues. She has worked to perfect a low-cost sand filter that would make cleaner drinking water in Third World countries and has given presentations for the World Water Forum. After graduation, Miller plans to work for six months with Greenpeace's Project Hot Seat Campaign as a field organizer and will enroll in the master's program in engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in fall 2009.

2003: Samuela Franceschini was awarded a 2003 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. Franceschini, a graduate of the environmental engineering undergraduate program and a graduate student in the environmental engineering program at the time of her fellowship award, completed her Ph.D. under the guidance of Professor Christina Tsai in probabilistic hydraulics. She is currently a Post-doctoral fellow in Italy.

Morris K. Udall Scholarship: Kelly Miller was awarded a 2007 Morris K. Udall Scholarship, awarded each year to a select group of outstanding undergraduates nationwide who intend to pursue careers related to the environment, Native American health care or tribal public policy.

EERI Seismic Student Contest: The goal of the Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition is to interest students in pursuing graduate work and research in earthquake engineering. This contest is sponsored by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute.

2008: A UB team competed against 17 teams from top universities across the United States in the 2008 Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition, held during the annual meeting of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute in New Orleans. The UB team comprised of Barbaros Cetiner of Bursa, Turkey; Kar Him Chiu of Hong Kong; Cheuk Kwok of Staten Island; Melissa Norlund of Petersburg, N.Y.; Neda Stoeva of Barbar, Bahrain; and Rob Wurstner of Buffalo took an impressive third place overall. The team designed and fabricated a scale-model frame structure for a cost-effective, earthquake-resistant commercial office building. The 5-foot balsa-wood structure was judged based on performance under severe earthquake simulation—as well as the annual income of the building based on rental income, initial costs and seismic costs. There also were architectural, poster and presentation components to the scoring.

2006: The UB team of Charles Ekiert (Rochester, NY) and David Keller (Buffalo, NY) took third place overall in the 2006 EERI Seismic Design Contest, which was held in San Fransisco. Charles and Dave graduated with their M.S. degrees in structural engineering in 2008 and are now employed at the major engineering firms of Thornton Tomasetti in Philadelphia and Weidlinger Associates in Washington, D.C., respectively.

2007 National Daniel W. Meade Student Contest sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers: Nadine R. Roberts won fifth place in the annual national contest that provides an opportunity for young civil engineers to further their professional development and gain national attention.

Water Environment Foundation's (WEF) National Student Design Competition: Thirteen senior students enrolled in CIE 449 - Environmental Engineering in Spring 2002 won this award for their project, "Letchworth State Park Water Supply Study." The prize was based on submittal of a design notebook and presentation at the WEF National Meeting in Chicago, September 28-October 2, 2002. Jean Balent, Samuela Franceschini, and Howard Kellick made the presentation. Other members of the student team were Chris Angier, Erika Bleyle, Dan Brown, Jeff Carpenter, Valarie Ellis, Heather Humphrey, Erik Magboo, Meaghan Partelow, Natalie Sauer, and Brian Szalda. Professor Alan Rabideau taught the class and advised the students.

ASCE Regional Competitions: Each year the UB student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (UB-ASCE) competes in its regional competition. In 2008, the Chapter took second place overall in the competition against engineering teams from institutions including Clarkson, Cornell, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology and West Point at the regional conference hosted by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. UB-ASCE had two teams competing in major events, in which students are challenged to create a steel bridge model and concrete canoe, as well as a number of other teams in events that were new to the competition this year. Both teams in major events placed second overall, including first place in stiffness and efficiency for the steel bridge team and first place in women's sprints for the concrete canoe team.
