Combined Degree Programs
B.S./M.Eng. Combined Degree Program
Program Overview
The Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering offers a combined B.S./M.Eng. (master of engineering) degree in civil engineering that equips students to assume leadership roles in the next generation of professional engineers and managers. Several tracks are designed to meet the specialization requirements of the today's engineering profession and the envisioned needs of society. The curriculum includes 148-154 total credit hours over a four-year, nine-month period, leading to a combined B.S./M.Eng. degree in civil engineering. As such, the combined program requires 6 credit hours less than the total credit hours required to obtain a B.S. degree and an M.Eng. degree in a normal sequential manner.
At the master's level, students can specialize in one of the following five areas:
Students enrolled in the combined program acquire graduate student status after completing 122-128 credit hours of prescribed undergraduate course work, typically after the fourth year. The reduction in undergraduate course requirements allows students to take two graduate courses in the ninth and tenth semesters, which are counted toward the required 30 credits of graduate coursework. The combined B.S./M.Eng. degree will be conferred after both sets of requirements are met, normally at the end of the fifth year.
Admissions and Degree Requirements
The B.S./M.Eng. curriculum is summarized in the table below. Civil engineering students wishing to pursue the combined degree program should apply for admission during their junior year. Admission to the program will be determined at the end of the junior year, and will be limited to civil engineering undergraduate students with overall and engineering UB grade point averages (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.
Normally, students pursuing the B.S./M.Eng. have limited options for financial aid at the graduate level. Students with strong academic records (GPA> 3.0) may wish to consider a sequential B.S. degree followed by an M.S. degree.
