Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering

"Here at UB, we share a level of intellectual engagement and an interest in each other's work that is stimulating; we're not off working by ourselves."

Christina Tsai says that one of her roles as a teacher and advisor is to keep her students' interest in their work at a level where they will continue to love what they do, whether they go on to work in industry or teach and do research. Physics and mathematics have always been fundamental interests of hers, and she says civil engineering and especially environmental engineering are a great way to combine them.

With research interests in stochastic hydraulics, hydroinformatics, and river hydraulics, Tsai was recently awarded University at Buffalo seed funding for research on sediment transport in unsteady open-channel flow—a free-surface flow, such as a river, that changes over time through inputs from weather or tributaries. The field presents fantastically challenging physical phenomena, she says. Just one practical benefit will be the ability to more accurately predict the lifespan of a reservoir by better understanding the sediment transport in the river feeding it.
