"Much of the work that's done here at UB pushes research into practice, which is a little different from what other schools do. Many of the researchers here are on code development teams, which means they're writing the design codes."
Michael earned both his undergraduate and master's degrees at UB, and he says the decision to stay for doctoral study was easy. He's interested in doing experimental work on seismic retrofit technology for existing structures. For that, he says, UB is the place to be. "There are very few schools that had capabilities similar to UB—even before we got the new lab (UB National Earthquake Engineering Simulation Node). The new lab advances earthquake study even further."
Michael works closely with his faculty advisor—and director of UB's MCEER—Dr. Michel Bruneau. "I could read about this stuff, but he's done these things. He's done a lot of research, and he puts a lot of the things that he researches into practice, so his expertise is invaluable."
