"The faculty in this program is excellent: When you tell people at conferences who you're working with, everyone knows them."

Jeff says the most compelling reasons to study structural engineering at UB are the faculty and the lab: "There are very few places in the world where a graduate student—or anyone—can run experiments in facilities like the ones here." He has already completed two experimental projects. The first, for his M.S. thesis, was an investigation of light-gauge steel plate shear for certain materials planned for the seismic retrofit of buildings. The second, which is the beginning of his doctoral work, was an identification and concept experiment for a new type of eccentrically braced frame for application in the seismic retrofit of steel truss bridge piers. The experiments were developed from some ideas that his advisor, Michel Bruneau, suggested that Jeff refined. Jeff's career ambition, teaching, was validated during his experience as a teaching assistant.

Jeff says he likes Buffalo, "especially the social life here and, in particular, the music scene, which is really good for a city this size."
