Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering
We are a highly productive department that offers separate undergraduate programs in civil engineering and environmental engineering, as well as graduate programs in a variety of specialties.
We are world leaders in earthquake engineering. Our environmental program is growing rapidly, and we recently added an accredited B.S. degree. We have annual research expenditures in the range of $5-10 million.
Graduate Study
We are the only department in the State University of New York system that offers graduate education in civil or environmental engineering. We have 28 full-time faculty, as well as more than 160 full-time and 25 part-time graduate students pursuing programs of research and study leading to master of engineering (M.Eng.), master of science (M.S.), and doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.
Our areas of graduate study include:
Computational engineering mechanics
Environmental and hydrosystems engineering
Geomechanics and geotechnical engineering
Structural and earthquake engineering
Research Centers
We house three organized research centers:
The Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER) - a national center for research in and application of advanced and emerging technologies to reduce earthquake damage and losses through improved engineering, pre-earthquake planning, and post-earthquake recovery strategies.
The Center for Integrated Waste Management (CIWM), which contains the NYS Center for Hazardous Waste Management (NYSCHWM) - a public-benefit research and development organization dedicated to the discovery of better environmental technologies and waste-management strategies.
The Great Lakes Program (GLP) - a center for research, education, and outreach activities related to the Great Lakes ecosystem.
We also house the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory, one of the world's premier laboratories in earthquake engineering research. The laboratory recently underwent a $21 million expansion funded by the George E. Brown Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation program of the National Science Foundation and the Construction Fund of the State University of New York. The laboratory is one of the most versatile seismic testing facilities in the United States, featuring online tele-observation and tele-operation capabilities, two movable large-capacity shake tables, strong reaction walls, and large power capacity to conduct high-speed, high-load dynamic testing.
Alumni
We are proud of our alumni, many of whom have been involved with major civil engineering projects. Our Ph.D. graduates have gone on to successful faculty positions at such universities as the University of California-Berkeley, Texas A&M, Cornell, Rice, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Southern Florida, Central Florida, the University of California-Davis, Rutgers, the University of Missouri-Rolla, the University of Maryland, and others. Five of our recent Ph.D. graduates who are in faculty positions have received the prestigious NSF Career Award.
